Los Angeles International Airport (IATA: LAX, ICAO: KLAX) is the primary international airport serving Los Angeles, California, and the busiest airport in the western United States. Located about 27 km southwest of downtown Los Angeles in the Westchester district, LAX is the main hub for Alaska Airlines (AS), American Airlines (AA), Delta Air Lines (DL), and United Airlines (UA), and a key base for Southwest Airlines (WN), JetBlue (B6), and Spirit Airlines (NK).
Opened in 1928, LAX has grown to become one of the most important aviation hubs in the world. The airport operates nine passenger terminals arranged in a horseshoe shape around the central terminal area: Terminal 1, Terminal 2, Terminal 3, Terminal B (Tom Bradley International Terminal), Terminal 4, Terminal 5, Terminal 6, Terminal 7, and Terminal 8. Terminals are connected by a free shuttle bus and walkways, with a new Automated People Mover (APM) system under construction. Terminals
Los Angeles International Airport operates nine passenger terminals arranged in a horseshoe shape around the central terminal area. Terminals are connected by a free shuttle bus (Route A) and covered walkways. A new Automated People Mover (APM) system is under construction and will connect all terminals to the LAX/Metro Transit Center and a new consolidated car rental facility.
Terminal 1 (Southwest Airlines, Allegiant) is used primarily by Southwest Airlines (WN) for domestic flights. It has 17 gates and features a newly renovated interior with modern dining options.
Terminal 2 (Delta Air Lines, Virgin Atlantic, international carriers) is used by Delta Air Lines (DL), Virgin Atlantic (VS), and several international airlines. It has 11 gates.
Terminal 3 (Delta Air Lines) is used primarily by Delta Air Lines (DL) and has 12 gates. It is connected to Terminal B via a walkway.
Terminal B (Tom Bradley International Terminal) is the main international terminal, handling most international long-haul flights. Transportation
Los Angeles International Airport is well connected to downtown Los Angeles, Hollywood, Santa Monica, and the surrounding region through several transport options. The airport is located about 27 km southwest of downtown Los Angeles.
FlyAway Bus
The LAX FlyAway bus is the most popular and affordable option for reaching key destinations in Los Angeles. Buses run from the LAX Upper/Departures Level to Union Station (downtown), Van Nuys, and Hollywood. Buses run every 30 minutes from early morning to late evening. A one-way ticket costs $9.75 to Union Station, and the journey takes about 35–60 minutes depending on traffic. Tickets can be purchased online or from the driver.
Metro Rail (C Line / K Line)
The LAX/Metro Transit Center connects to the Metro C Line (Green) and K Line, providing access to downtown Los Angeles via transfer to the A Line or E Line. The Metro is the cheapest option, but requires a shuttle bus connection from the terminals. A single ride costs $1.75, and a day pass is $5.
Taxi
Official taxis are available 24/7 at designated taxi ranks outside each terminal. The journey to downtown Los Angeles takes 30–60 minutes depending on traffic and costs approximately $50–70. Flat-rate fares apply to some destinations. Only licensed taxis should be used.
Ride-hailing
Uber and Lyft operate at LAX. Pick-up zones are located on the Upper/Departures Level, with a specific LAX-it shuttle lot for some services. Prices are usually similar to or slightly cheaper than taxis, with fares to downtown typically $40–60.
