Overview
Suvarnabhumi International Airport (IATA: BKK, ICAO: VTBS) is the primary international airport serving Bangkok, the capital of Thailand. Located about 30 km east of Bangkok city centre in Racha Thewa, Bang Phli District, Samut Prakan Province, BKK is the main hub for Thai Airways (TG) and a key base for Bangkok Airways (PG) and Thai Vietjet (VZ).
Opened in September 2006, Suvarnabhumi replaced Don Mueang International Airport (DMK) as Bangkok’s primary international hub. The airport was built on a site known as Nong Ngu Hao, which means “Cobra Swamp” in Thai, and was originally planned to open in 2000. The name “Suvarnabhumi,” meaning “Golden Land” in Sanskrit, was chosen by King Bhumibol Adulyadej. The terminal building, designed by German architect Helmut Jahn, features a distinctive glass and steel structure with a wave-like roof and is one of the largest airport terminal buildings in the world by floor area, covering approximately 563,000 square metres. The airport operates two terminals — the Main Terminal and the Satellite Terminal (SAT-1) — with the SAT-1 connected to the main building by an automated people mover.
BKK connects to over 137 nonstop destinations across Asia, Europe, the Middle East, Australia, and North America, served by more than 100 airlines. It is the main hub for Thai Airways (TG) and a major gateway between Southeast Asia and the rest of the world. In 2024, the airport recorded 62,235,042 passengers, a 20.4% increase from 2023. The airport operates 24 hours a day and is a key driver of Thailand’s tourism industry, which is one of the country’s most important economic sectors.

Terminals
Suvarnabhumi International Airport operates two passenger terminals — the Main Terminal and the Satellite Terminal (SAT-1) — connected by an automated people mover. The airport is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
The Main Terminal is the primary building and handles most international and domestic flights. The terminal is organised across several passenger floors: B Floor (basement) houses the Airport Rail Link station and various shops; Level 1 is for bus and taxi parking and the Magic Food Point food court; Level 2 is the Arrivals hall for domestic and international flights; Level 3 contains meeting areas, shops, restaurants, check-in counters, and various service desks; and Level 4 is the Departures hall for domestic and international flights. The terminal features a large duty-free area, multiple lounges (including the Miracle First and Business Class Lounges, Louis’ Tavern Lounge, and various airline lounges), a wide range of dining options, and free Wi-Fi throughout.
The Satellite Terminal (SAT-1) is connected to the Main Terminal by an automated people mover and handles additional international departures. It features lounges near Gate S113 and other facilities.
The airport also has a dedicated cargo area and multiple parking zones, including Long Term Parking Zones A and D, and short-term parking zones with rates starting at 25 THB for the first hour.
The minimum connection time at BKK is 60–90 minutes for most international transfers, depending on the terminal and airline.

Transportation
Suvarnabhumi International Airport is well connected to Bangkok city centre through several transport options. The airport is located about 30 km east of Bangkok.
Airport Rail Link (ARL)
The Airport Rail Link connects Suvarnabhumi Airport to Phaya Thai Station in central Bangkok. The station is located on B Floor (basement) of the Main Terminal. Trains run every 10–15 minutes from 05:30 to 24:00. The journey to Phaya Thai takes about 26–30 minutes. Fares range from 15 THB to 45 THB depending on the station. This is the fastest and most reliable option for reaching the city, avoiding Bangkok’s notorious traffic.
Taxi
Official metered taxis are available 24 hours a day from the taxi stand on Level 1 of the Main Terminal. Passengers must take a queue ticket from the machine and board the taxi matching their ticket number. The fare to central Bangkok is approximately 250–400 THB, plus expressway tolls (25–45 THB depending on the route) and a 50 THB airport surcharge. The journey takes 45–90 minutes depending on traffic. Only official taxis from the designated stand should be used.
Airport Bus
BMTA public buses operate from the airport to various destinations in Bangkok and beyond. The S1 route connects the airport to Khao San Road and the Royal Palace area, with fares of 60 THB and operating hours from 04:30 to 22:00. Other routes include the 554 (to Rangsit, 38 THB), 555 (to Rangsit, 33 THB), and 558 (to Central Plaza Rama 2, 35 THB). Buses depart from Level 1, Gates 1 and 10, and Level 2, Gates 5 and 6.
Ride-hailing
Grab and Bolt operate at BKK. Pick-up zones are clearly marked outside the terminal. Prices are usually similar to or slightly higher than metered taxis, with fares to the city centre typically 300–500 THB.
Private Transfer
Book a driver in advance for a stress-free arrival. Prices start from 500 THB (approximately €13) for a sedan, including meet & greet in the arrivals hall. Popular with families and business travellers.
Car Rental

Parking
The airport has multiple parking zones. Short-term parking rates start at 25 THB for the first hour, 50 THB for two hours, up to 250 THB for 7–24 hours. Long-term parking is available at Zones A and D, with rates starting at 20 THB per hour. Pick-up and drop-off vehicles are free for the first 15 minutes.
