Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport (IATA: SYD, ICAO: YSSY), commonly known as Sydney Airport, is the primary international airport serving Sydney, the capital of New South Wales, and the busiest airport in Australia. Located about 8 km south of Sydney city centre in the suburb of Mascot, SYD is the main hub for Qantas (QF) and a key base for Virgin Australia (VA) and Jetstar (JQ).
Opened in 1920, Sydney Airport is one of the oldest continually operating airports in the world. It operates three passenger terminals — Terminal 1 (International), Terminal 2 (Domestic), and Terminal 3 (Qantas Domestic) — with T2 and T3 located adjacent to each other, and T1 located on the opposite side of the airport. A free T-Bus shuttle and the Airport Link train connect the terminals. The airport is situated on the shores of Botany Bay and operates 24 hours a day.
SYD connects to over 90 destinations across Asia, the Pacific, the Middle East, North America, and Europe, served by more than 50 airlines. Terminals
Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport operates three passenger terminals — Terminal 1 (International), Terminal 2 (Domestic), and Terminal 3 (Qantas Domestic). Terminals 2 and 3 are located adjacent to each other on the northeastern side of the airport, while Terminal 1 is located on the northwestern side, separated by the main runway.
Terminal 1 (T1) is the International Terminal and handles all international arrivals and departures. It has two piers: Pier B (Gates 8–10, 24–29, 30–37), used by Qantas (QF) and oneworld and SkyTeam members (except Delta Air Lines); and Pier C (Gates 50–63), used by Virgin Australia (VA) and its partners, including Delta Air Lines (DL), and Star Alliance carriers. All international passengers check in on the first floor, with check-in counters divided by airline. The terminal features a large duty-free area, multiple lounges, and a wide range of dining and shopping options.
Terminal 2 (T2) is the largest domestic terminal and serves domestic flights operated by Virgin Australia (VA), Jetstar (JQ), Rex (ZL), FlyPelican, and Link Airways. It handles flights to destinations across New South Wales and other Australian states.
Terminal 3 (T3) is the Qantas Domestic Terminal and handles domestic flights operated by Qantas (QF) and QantasLink. It is located adjacent to Terminal 2 and is connected by a short walkway.
A free T-Bus shuttle connects Terminal 1 with Terminals 2 and 3. The service operates every 30 minutes from 05:30 to 21:30, with a journey time of about 10 minutes. Outside these hours, the Airport Link train is the alternative. Passengers transferring between international and domestic terminals should allow at least 2 hours for immigration, baggage collection, and the terminal change.
The minimum connection time at SYD is 90 minutes for international-to-domestic transfers and 60 minutes for domestic-to-domestic transfers.

Transportation
Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport is well connected to Sydney city centre and the surrounding region through several transport options. The airport is located about 8 km south of Sydney CBD.
Airport Link Train
The Airport Link train connects Sydney Airport to the city centre via the T8 Airport & South Line. Trains run every 10 minutes from both the International (T1) and Domestic (T2/T3) stations. The journey to Central Station takes about 15 minutes. Fares include an airport gate pass: a single adult fare to City stations costs approximately $21.64 off-peak and $22.94 peak when using an Opal card or contactless payment. The cheapest way is to tap on with an Opal card or a Visa, Mastercard, or Amex card. The train station is located directly beneath Terminal 1 and Terminal 3.
Bus
Public buses operate from Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 (but not Terminal 2). Routes include the 400 and 420 to Burwood, Bondi Junction, and other destinations. Fares are significantly cheaper than the train, starting from around $4, but journey times are longer. A direct bus from Terminal 1 to Town Hall takes about 28 minutes and costs $4–18.
Taxi
Official taxis are available 24/7 at taxi ranks outside each terminal. From 3 November 2025, a fixed fare trial applies for trips from Sydney Airport to the Sydney CBD trial area: $60 for a standard taxi and $80 for a maxi-taxi (5+ passengers or requested). The fixed fare includes all tolls and surcharges, with only a card payment surcharge (max 5%) and potential cleaning fee (max $120) permitted as extras. For destinations outside the CBD trial area, standard metered fares apply.
Ride-hailing
Uber and DiDi operate at Sydney Airport. Pick-up zones are clearly marked outside each terminal. Prices are usually similar to or slightly higher than metered taxis, with fares to the city centre typically $50–70.
Airport Shuttle Bus
Several companies operate shuttle buses from the airport to hotels in downtown Sydney. Buses depart every 15–60 minutes from early morning to late night. Fares are $22–33 per person, and the journey takes 20–80 minutes depending on the number of hotel stops.
