Overview
Vienna International Airport (IATA: VIE, ICAO: LOWW), also known as Flughafen Wien-Schwechat, is the primary international airport serving Vienna, the capital of Austria, and the busiest airport in the country. Located about 18 km southeast of Vienna city centre in the municipality of Schwechat, VIE is the main hub for Austrian Airlines (OS) and a key base for Ryanair (FR) and Wizz Air (W6).
Opened in 1954, Vienna International Airport has grown to become one of the most important aviation hubs in Central Europe. It operates four passenger terminals — Terminal 1, Terminal 1A, Terminal 2, and Terminal 3 — all connected within the same building complex. Terminal 3 (formerly Skylink) opened in 2012 and is the largest and most modern terminal, handling most international and long-haul flights. The airport also has a dedicated cargo area and is connected to Vienna by the City Airport Train (CAT), S-Bahn lines S7, and several bus routes.
VIE connects to over 190 destinations across Europe, Asia, North America, and the Middle East, served by more than 60 airlines. Terminals
Vienna International Airport operates four passenger terminals — Terminal 1, Terminal 1A, Terminal 2, and Terminal 3 — all connected within the same building complex. The airport’s terminals are designed for quick transfers, with a minimum connection time of just 25–35 minutes for most flights.
Terminal 1 is primarily used by international airlines outside the Star Alliance, including British Airways (BA), Air France (AF), KLM (KL), Emirates (EK), and Qatar Airways (QR). It handles a mix of Schengen and non-Schengen flights, with direct access to Concourses B and C.
Terminal 1A is a smaller facility primarily used by low-cost carriers such as Ryanair (FR) and Wizz Air (W6). It is located adjacent to Terminal 1 and offers a simplified check-in experience.
Terminal 2 is used mainly by Austrian Airlines (OS) for European and Schengen flights, and it is also the main terminal for Lufthansa (LH) and other Star Alliance partners. It is connected directly to Terminal 1 and Terminal 3.
Terminal 3 is the largest and most modern terminal, opened in 2012. It handles most long-haul and non-Schengen flights, including all Austrian Airlines (OS) intercontinental services, as well as flights operated by Emirates (EK), Qatar Airways (QR), and Singapore Airlines (SQ). It features a large duty-free area, multiple lounges (including the Austrian Airlines Senator Lounge and the Vienna Lounge), and a wide range of dining and shopping options. Terminal 3 is directly connected to the airport’s railway station and the City Airport Train.
The airport’s centralized security checkpoint is located in the main terminal building, allowing passengers to move between terminals after security without re-clearing. The minimum connection time at VIE is 25 minutes for Schengen-to-Schengen transfers and 35 minutes for international-to-international transfers.

Transportation
Vienna International Airport is well connected to Vienna city centre and the surrounding region through several transport options. The airport is located about 18 km southeast of Vienna.
City Airport Train (CAT)
The City Airport Train (CAT) is the fastest option, connecting the airport directly to Wien Mitte station in the city centre in just 16 minutes. Trains run every 30 minutes from 06:06 to 23:06. A single ticket costs approximately €14.90 (or €24.90 for a round trip). The CAT also offers flight check-in and luggage services at Wien Mitte.
S-Bahn Line S7
The S-Bahn line S7 connects the airport to Vienna’s main railway stations, including Wien Mitte, Praterstern, and Floridsdorf. Trains run every 30 minutes and the journey to Wien Mitte takes about 27 minutes. A single ticket costs approximately €4.60 (or €2.40 with a valid Vienna city ticket). This is a cheaper alternative to the CAT.
Railjet & Long-Distance Trains
Vienna Airport is also connected to Austria’s long-distance rail network, with direct Railjet services to destinations such as Salzburg, Linz, and Innsbruck, as well as international destinations including Budapest, Prague, and Bratislava.
Bus
Several bus companies connect the airport to Vienna city centre and other locations in Austria, including Vienna Airport Lines (VAL). Buses run every 20–30 minutes and fares start from €8. The journey to the city centre takes 20–40 minutes depending on traffic.
Taxi
Official taxis are available 24/7 outside the Arrivals hall of each terminal. A fixed-price taxi to Vienna city centre costs around €40–50 (approximately $44–55). The journey takes 20–30 minutes depending on traffic. Only licensed taxis should be used.
Ride-hailing
Uber and Bolt operate at VIE. Pick-up zones are clearly marked outside the terminal. Prices are similar to taxis but can be higher during peak hours.
