Overview
Sarajevo International Airport (IATA: SJJ, ICAO: LQSA), also known as Butmir Airport, is the primary international airport serving Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Located about 6 km southwest of Sarajevo city centre in the municipality of Ilidža, SJJ is the main hub for the country’s international air traffic and a key base for Wizz Air (W6) and Ryanair (FR).
Opened in 1969, Sarajevo International Airport has grown to become the largest and most important airport in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It operates a single, modern passenger terminal that was extensively renovated in 2017. The terminal features 10 check-in desks, 6 gates (4 with jet bridges), and a duty-free area. The airport also has a dedicated cargo area and is connected to Sarajevo by trolleybus line 103, the “Centrotrans” shuttle bus, and taxi services.
SJJ connects to over 30 destinations across Europe, the Middle East, and the Balkans, served by more than 15 airlines. It is a key base for Wizz Air (W6), Ryanair (FR), and Turkish Airlines (TK), and a growing gateway between the Balkans and the rest of Europe. In 2024, Sarajevo International Airport handled approximately 1.8 million passengers, maintaining its position as Bosnia and Herzegovina’s busiest airport. Sarajevo International Airport operates a single, modern passenger terminal that handles all international and domestic flights. The terminal was extensively renovated in 2017, transforming it into a modern, efficient facility.
The terminal features 10 check-in desks, 6 gates (4 with jet bridges), and a duty-free area. It is designed for efficient passenger flow, with check-in counters and security screening located on the ground floor and the departures area on the upper level. The terminal offers a range of passenger amenities including duty-free shops, cafes and restaurants, a business lounge, free Wi-Fi, and a tourist information desk.
The airport also has a dedicated cargo terminal with a capacity of 20,000 tonnes per year. A separate general aviation facility is located on the northern side of the airport.
The airport operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The minimum connection time at SJJ is 45 minutes for most transfers, as all gates are within the same terminal building.

Transportation
Sarajevo International Airport is well connected to Sarajevo city centre and the surrounding region through several transport options. The airport is located about 6 km southwest of Sarajevo.
Trolleybus Line 103
Trolleybus line 103 connects Sarajevo Airport to the city centre, with stops at Ilidža, Otoka, and Marijin Dvor. Trolleybuses run every 10–15 minutes from 05:00 to 23:00. The journey to the city centre takes about 25–30 minutes. A single ticket costs 1.80 BAM (approximately €0.90) when purchased at a kiosk, or 2.50 BAM from the driver.
Centrotrans Shuttle Bus
The Centrotrans shuttle bus connects the airport to the main bus station (Autobuska stanica) in Sarajevo. Buses run approximately every 30–60 minutes, timed to coincide with flight arrivals. The journey takes about 25–30 minutes. A single ticket costs 5 BAM (approximately €2.50). This is a convenient option for passengers with luggage.
Taxi
Official taxis are available 24/7 outside the Arrivals hall. The journey to Sarajevo city centre takes 15–20 minutes depending on traffic and costs approximately 20–30 BAM (approximately €10–15). Only licensed taxis should be used. Taxi apps like Moj Taxi and Sarajevo Taxi are also available.
Ride-hailing
International ride-hailing services such as Uber and Bolt are not widely available in Sarajevo. Local taxi apps and traditional taxis are the primary alternatives for private transport.
