Noi Bai International Airport (IATA: HAN, ICAO: VVNB) is the largest airport in northern Vietnam and the second busiest airport in the country. The airport serves Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, and is located approximately 28 kilometres north of the city centre in Soc Son District. The airport is operated by the Northern Airport Authority (NAA) and is a joint civil-military facility, also serving military flight operations.
Noi Bai International Airport began operations after the Vietnam War and has spent nearly 40 years developing into a modern gateway connecting Hanoi with destinations worldwide. The airport is classified as a 4E aerodrome under ICAO standards and is equipped with two runways: 11L/29R (3,200 metres × 45 metres) and 11R/29L (3,800 metres × 45 metres), capable of accommodating wide-body aircraft including the Airbus A380 and Boeing 787.
The airport operates two passenger terminals: Terminal 1 (T1) for domestic flights and Terminal 2 (T2) for international flights. T1 opened in October 2001 with an initial design capacity of 6 million passengers per year, later expanded to 15 million passengers per year with a total floor area of 115,000 square metres. T2 opened on 25 December 2014, featuring a wing span design with a total floor area of 130,216 square metres and a designed capacity of 10 million passengers per year, expandable to 15 million. Following the T2 expansion completed in December 2025, the terminal’s total area exceeded 200,000 square metres, with boarding gates increasing from 17 to 30 and boarding bridges from 14 to 27, bringing the airport’s total capacity to 30 million passengers per year.
In the first half of 2025, Noi Bai International Airport handled more than 100,000 flights with 16.5 million passengers. The airport was ranked among the world’s Top 100 best airports for the seventh time and ensured absolute safety and security for over 30 million passengers in 2024.
