Overview
Hong Kong International Airport (IATA: HKG, ICAO: VHHH), also known as Chek Lap Kok Airport, is the primary international airport serving Hong Kong, a Special Administrative Region of China. Located on the artificial island of Chek Lap Kok, about 34 km west of Central Hong Kong, HKG is the main hub for Cathay Pacific (CX) and its subsidiary HK Express (UO), and a key base for Hong Kong Airlines (HX) and Greater Bay Airlines (HB).
Opened in July 1998, Hong Kong International Airport replaced the famous Kai Tak Airport as Hong Kong’s main aviation hub. The airport is built on a 12.48 square kilometre artificial island created by flattening two existing islands, Chek Lap Kok and Lam Chau. It operates a single, massive passenger terminal — one of the largest in the world — with a capacity of 80 million passengers per year. A third runway was completed in 2022, and a new Terminal 2 (T2) opened in September 2025, increasing the airport’s capacity to 120 million passengers per year.
HKG connects to over 200 destinations across Asia, Europe, North America, the Middle East, Africa, and Oceania, served by more than 100 airlines. It is a key global hub for Cathay Pacific (CX) and a major gateway between mainland China and the rest of the world. Terminals
Hong Kong International Airport operates a single, massive passenger terminal with a capacity of 80 million passengers per year, along with a newly opened Terminal 2 (T2). The main terminal (Terminal 1) is one of the largest in the world and is designed for efficient passenger flow.
Terminal 1 is the primary terminal, organised over several levels. The Arrivals Hall is on Level 5, the Departures Hall is on Level 7, and the Check-in Hall is on Level 7. The terminal has 400+ check-in counters, 90+ boarding gates (including 50+ with jet bridges), and a large duty-free area. It features multiple lounges, including the Cathay Pacific “The Wing”, “The Pier”, and “The Bridge” lounges, as well as the Plaza Premium Lounges.
Terminal 2 (T2) opened in September 2025 as part of the airport’s Three-Runway System (3RS) project. It is connected to Terminal 1 by an automated people mover and features a new check-in hall, additional gates, and expanded retail and dining options. T2 is designed to handle a significant portion of the airport’s growing passenger traffic.
The airport also has a dedicated cargo terminal, the world’s busiest, and a SkyPier ferry terminal providing direct ferry services to destinations in mainland China and Macau.
The minimum connection time at HKG is 50 minutes for most transfers, with some airlines offering 45-minute minimum connections within the same terminal.

Transportation
Hong Kong International Airport is well connected to Central Hong Kong, Kowloon, and the surrounding region through several transport options. The airport is located about 34 km west of Central Hong Kong.
Airport Express (MTR)
The Airport Express is the fastest and most convenient option, connecting the airport to Hong Kong Station (Central) in 24 minutes, Kowloon Station in 22 minutes, and Tsing Yi Station in 12 minutes. Trains run every 10 minutes from 05:50 to 01:15. A single ticket to Hong Kong Station costs HK$115 (approximately $15). A round-trip ticket costs HK$205. The Airport Express also offers in-town check-in at Hong Kong and Kowloon stations.
Taxi
Hong Kong has three types of taxis: Urban (red) taxis serve most of Hong Kong, New Territories (green) taxis serve the New Territories, and Lantau (blue) taxis serve Lantau Island. Taxi stands are located outside the Arrivals Hall on Level 5. The journey to Central Hong Kong takes 30–45 minutes depending on traffic and costs approximately HK$350–450 (approximately $45–60). Only licensed taxis should be used.
Bus
Several bus companies operate from the airport to various destinations in Hong Kong. Citybus (A11, A12, A21, A22, A29, etc.) and Long Win Bus (A31, A41, A43, etc.) provide services to Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, and the New Territories. Buses run every 15–30 minutes. Fares start from HK$40 (approximately $5). The journey takes 45–90 minutes depending on the destination and traffic.
Ride-hailing
Uber operates at HKG, but its availability is limited compared to traditional taxis. Pick-up zones are clearly marked outside the terminal.
