Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (IATA: CAN, ICAO: ZGGG) is the primary international airport serving Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong Province in southeastern China. Located approximately 28 kilometres north of the city centre, straddling the border of Baiyun and Huadu districts, the airport opened in August 2004 as a replacement for the older Baiyun Airport, which had reached capacity.
CAN is the main hub for China Southern Airlines, the largest airline in Asia by fleet size and passenger numbers, and a focus city for China Eastern Airlines, Shenzhen Airlines, and other domestic carriers. The airport is a major gateway between China and Southeast Asia, Oceania, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. It is operated by Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport Company Limited.
In 2025, Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport served 83.59 million passengers, a year-on-year increase of 9.5%, with international passenger traffic reaching 17.45 million, up 19.3%. The airport recorded 550,000 aircraft movements, averaging 1,508 per day, and handled 2.44 million tonnes of cargo and mail.
The airport officially entered a new era on October 30, 2025, when Terminal 3 and the fifth runway opened together, giving CAN the capacity to handle 120 million passengers and 3.8 million tonnes of cargo annually. The final designed capacity is set to reach 140 million passengers and 6 million tonnes of cargo, positioning CAN as one of the world’s leading aviation hubs.
