Cairo International Airport (IATA: CAI, ICAO: HECA) is the primary international airport serving Cairo, Egypt, and the busiest airport in the country. Located approximately 15 kilometres (9 miles) northeast of downtown Cairo in Heliopolis, the airport is the principal gateway to Egypt and a major hub for the African and Middle Eastern regions.
Opened officially on 18 May 1963, Cairo International Airport has grown from an initial capacity of 5 million passengers annually to a current capacity exceeding 30 million passengers per year. The airport serves as the home base and primary hub for EgyptAir, the national carrier of Egypt.
The airport covers a vast area of approximately 37 square kilometres and operates three main passenger terminals (Terminals 1, 2, and 3), alongside dedicated facilities for private aviation and seasonal flights. Terminal 2, the most modern facility, opened in 2017 and serves major international carriers.
Cairo International Airport serves as a key hub for airlines including EgyptAir, Air Cairo, Air Arabia Egypt, and Nile Air. The airport is the largest airline hub in Egypt by number of departures and handles both domestic and international flights, connecting Egypt with destinations across Europe, Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and North America.
The airport has received multiple international accreditations, including the Airport Health Accreditation (AHA), the Public Health and Safety Readiness Plan (PHSRP) certificate from Airports Council International (ACI), and integrated ISO certifications for quality, environment, and occupational health and safety renewed in 2024.
