Kansai International Airport (IATA: KIX, ICAO: RJBB) is the primary international airport serving the Kansai region of Japan, including the major cities of Osaka, Kyoto, and Kobe. The airport is located on an artificial island in Osaka Bay, approximately 50 kilometres southwest of Osaka city centre, and was the world’s first fully artificial-island airport when it opened on 4 September 1994.
KIX serves as a major hub for Japan Airlines, All Nippon Airways, and Peach Aviation, and is a key gateway between the Kansai region and destinations across Asia, Europe, North America, and Oceania. The airport operates two passenger terminals: Terminal 1, which underwent a major renovation with a grand opening in March 2025, and Terminal 2, which is dedicated to low-cost carriers.
In FY2025, Kansai International Airport served approximately 33.55 million passengers, contributing to a record-breaking year for the Kansai Airports Group. The three airports operated by the group (KIX, Itami, and Kobe) handled a combined 54.01 million passengers, a 6% increase from the previous fiscal year. International passenger numbers at KIX set a record for the fiscal year since the airport opened, driven by increased inbound demand and the effects of the World Expo. In May 2026, KIX reached a historic milestone, welcoming its 600 millionth passenger since opening.
