Carrasco/General Cesáreo L. Berisso International Airport (IATA: MVD, ICAO: SUMU) is the main international airport of Uruguay and the country’s largest and most important aviation hub. The airport is located approximately 18–23 kilometres east of Montevideo, the capital city, in the Canelones Department near Ciudad de la Costa.

The airport began operations in 1947 and was originally known as Paso Carrasco Airport. In 2003, the Uruguayan government transferred the management, operation, and maintenance of the airport to a private investment consortium, Puerta del Sur S.A., which remains the operator today.

A major milestone was reached in 2009 with the inauguration of a new passenger terminal designed by internationally renowned Uruguayan-born architect Rafael Viñoly. The terminal’s iconic design features a gently curved 365-metre roof inspired by the rolling dunes of Uruguay’s coastline, spanning the entire length of the building and extending beyond its ends to rest on the ground. The project required an investment of $165 million and has received numerous international awards for its architectural level, aesthetics, operational functionality, and services.

In 2025, Carrasco Airport served 2.1 million passengers. The new terminal has a designed annual capacity of 4.5 million passengers, with 44 check-in positions, 8 boarding gates (four equipped with telescopic boarding bridges), and the ability to handle aircraft ranging from the CRJ-900 to the Airbus A380.
