Newark Liberty International Airport (IATA: EWR, ICAO: KEWR) is a major international airport serving the New York metropolitan area, located in Newark, New Jersey, approximately 15 miles southwest of Midtown Manhattan. The airport is owned and operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which also manages John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and LaGuardia Airport (LGA).

EWR opened on October 1, 1928, making it the first major airport serving the New York metropolitan area. It was renamed Newark Liberty International Airport in 2002 to honor the victims of the September 11 attacks. The airport is a major hub for United Airlines, which operates from Terminal C with 68 gates and a dedicated Polaris lounge, and serves as a focus city for several other domestic and international carriers.

The airport operates three passenger terminals (A, B, and C) with more than 125 gates collectively. The new Terminal A opened in 2023 at a cost of $2.7 billion and was recognized as the World’s Best New Airport Terminal and awarded a prestigious five-star rating by Skytrax in 2024 . Fifty airlines operate from Newark, offering nonstop service to more than 180 destinations.

In 2025, Newark Liberty International Airport served 47 million passengers, its third-busiest year on record. During the year-end holiday travel period, the airport welcomed 2.06 million passengers, a 3% increase over the prior year, driven largely by domestic travel demand. A new $3.5 billion AirTrain system is currently under construction, with operations expected to begin in 2030.
